ENVIRONMENTAL COMMITMENT

TFS is committed to adopting and maintaining the highest environmental and ethical standards in all aspects of its business.

TFS maintains a dynamic and pro-active approach to environmental management. The company has achieved accreditation for ISO 9,001, 14,001 and AS 4,801 and continually works towards environmental and ethical best practice.

Reducing exploitation

The high value of this resource has lead to widespread illegal cutting and smuggling in India.  This over-exploitation has led to a dwindling supply. Plantations provide an alternative source of Indian Sandalwood, helping to limit the rapid deforestation of Indian Sandalwood in the wild.

Minimising “Greenhouse Effects” –sustainable energy sources

TFS is committed to minimizing its Carbon footprint and is currently looking at sustainable non-polluting energy sources for use in its future distillation operation.  Hydro-electricity generation is available in Kununurra and is considered the cleanest and most efficient method of power generation.

Lowering Watertable

Sandalwood is a deep-rooted tree that assists in lowering the watertable.  This helps to combat the problem of salinity, where excessive salt in the land and water exists as a result of human activity such as crop farming.

Habitat for Breeding

Several bird species, including the Australian pratincole, Australian Bustard and plumed whistling duck have been observed to breed quite freely in the TFS plantations at Kununurra, while they will not breed in surrounding agricultural farms.

Reforestation

TFS supports the protection of the Kimberley’s natural ecosystems and unique environment.  Our plantations are established on land that was previously used for agricultural and/or horticultural production.

Reducing Pesticides

TFS is using innovation to continually minimise the use of pesticides.  By planting a tropical legume on plantations, TFS has been able to limit the use of pesticides while also effectively reducing the growth of weeds.  The naturally occurring Santalols within the trees are also an effective preventative against termites and other pests.

Water Conservation

In 2006 TFS constructed a ground breaking water recycling plant on its Kununurra plantations, offering a saving of 7-billion litres of water each year.  This initiative was recognised by the Western Australian Water Corporation which awarded TFS the statewide Remote and Rural Water Award.

TFS has also installed drip irrigation in some sections of its plantations and will use drip irrigation in all future plantations on its Kingston Rest property, ensuring an 80% reduction in water consumption compared to the traditional method of flood irrigation.
